Arthritis Pain Medication

If you have a confirmed diagnosis of osteoarthritis (OA), it is not uncommon for a physician to either prescribe a Cox-II inhibitor (like Celebrex) or to recommend the use of some of the over-the-counter arthritis pain medications mentioned below.

Now, there are three very important issues that should be pointed out about these arthritis pain remedies. First, they are exactly that. They ease the pain of osteoarthritis but that is the extent of what they are capable of doing.

They do not do anything that will rehabilitate damaged cartilage, or in any manner halt the progression of the disease. They are intended to ease pain only. Also, there are clinical studies that indicate that they may even worsen your arthritis.

Furthermore, these drugs can have very serious side effects. In October 2004, Merck & Company voluntarily pulled Vioxx from the market because it was shown to increase the risk of heart attack by as much as four times the norm. The Wall Street Journal ran a story linking Celebrex to (at that time) ten deaths during its first three months on the market.

Additionally, there were eleven other cases of gastrointestinal hemorrhage associated with the use of this drug. Of the ten deaths, half of them were from ulcers (also known as gastrointestinal bleeding). Two deaths were from heart attacks; one to a kidney problem; one to an interaction with another drug; and no cause was found for the other death.

Over-the-Counter NSAID’s

There are two other types of pain relievers that are frequently used by those who suffer from OA. They are:

1. Acetaminophen
2. NSAID’s (Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs)

Datril® and Tylenol® are two of the “brand names” for acetaminophen pain relievers. And, there are others.

There is a wide range of NSAID’s sold over-the-counter:

1. Aspirin
2. Ibuprofren (Advil® and Motrin®)
3. Naproxen (Aleve® and Naprosyn®)

What is of interest is that the government is now becoming concerned about the use of this class of “pain relievers” as well. And, there have been a lot of warnings coming from government officials. (You are now finding more label “precautions” on these products.)

Also with their usage, there have been reported cases of ulcers developing; fever; sore throats; breathing difficulties; irregular heartbeat; and even high blood pressure. That is not to say that this is an indictment of them. However, there are risks in using them.
